Nina is a Campaign Director at MomsRising. Nina's career had focused on ending the oppression and exploitation of women and girls by facilitating the development of spaces where they can develop their leadership and share their own diverse lived experiences. She was previously a Program Manager for Family2Family and Community Family Life Services, and a Program Coordinator for the Young Women Leaders Program at the University of Central Florida. Nina is on the advisory panel of MissHeard, a teen girl empowerment magazine, and is published on the subject of feminist activism in Rhizomes.
When did you realize moms have superpowers?
"I was never one to lie to my mother, but when I was 15 I wanted to go out with some friends though my mother had already said no because my older sister couldn't chaperone that night. So, I lied to her for the first time (as far as I could remember) and went anyways. I felt terrible. Didn't even enjoy myself because the guilt was too much. It turns out my mother caught me in the lie, but waited until I came clean to her three months later to tell me. She didn't get mad, just laughed and told me never to do it again. I never lied to her again and spent the rest of my teenage years assuming moms had built in lie detectors...."
